About ScheldeMonitor

ScheldeMonitor is a Flemish-Dutch knowledge and information portal on research and monitoring in the Scheldt estuary. Commissioned by the Flemish-Dutch Scheldt Committee (VNSC), the portal serves as a central point for capturing and distributing many kinds of data and information concerning the various aspects that play a role across the entire area of  the Western Scheldt and the Sea Scheldt.

The core of ScheldeMonitor is the data portal, in which abiotic and biotic data are freely available. The platform also provides access to raw data and to derived data products and a links to tools and applications that are built from these data. The platform also contains an extensive collection of maps and literature, both modern and historical.

Data

The data portal of ScheldeMonitor contains a significant number of biotic and abiotic datasets which can be requested via the toolbox. Furthermore, data and metadata from the MONEOS program are provided in data sheets.

Pre-made data products

The platform provides a number of pre-made plots and graphs, that are based on select raw datasets within ScheldeMonitor. All products are freely available for download.

Interactive apps

As of 2020, ScheldeMonitor has created several RShiny applications by which users can make their own graphs and data products, based on the raw datasets.

Maps

Several datasets have been converted to spatial layers. These layers can be viewed, used and downloaded via the built-in ‘Geoviewer’ of ScheldeMonitor.

Historical Maps

ScheldeMonitor has received historical maps from various sources. These are systematically made public via this ‘side-by-side viewer’, in which users can set up old maps next to contemporary topography.

Literature

In collaboration with the Integrated Marine Information System (IMIS), ScheldeMonitor encompasses a large collection of scientific reports as well as non-scientific literature with a focus on the Scheldt estuary.

Aphia species register

Using a built-in search engine, ScheldeMonitor provides a catalogue of all organisms that occur in the Scheldt and the tidal areas. This catalogue is supported by the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).

Data analysis platform

ScheldeMonitor offers a platform by which users can run, store and share their R-scripts that are being used for analysis of the data within the database. The platform contains an online RStudio workspace, a GitHUB organization and a number of RShiny applications.

O&M Archive

The working group Research and Monitoring Scheldt Estuary (O&M) uses an online environment in the Marine Data Archive of VLIZ, where it archives reports and original monitoring data. This space is only accessible to people within the O&M working group.
