Heredia, M.; Van Hoestenberghe, T.; Peeters, P.; Mostaert, F. (2016). Breach growth in real-dikes: subreport 2. Simulations for Wijmeers II. Version 4.0. FHR reports, 00_089. Flanders Hydraulics Research: Antwerp. III, 25 pp.
Two in situ dike breach experiments following overflow are considered within the framework of the realisation of the ‘Sigmaplan’ for the River Scheldt in Flanders. The first experiment was executed in Lillo along the tidal river Scheldt in May 2012. The second experiment is foreseen to be executed in Wijmeers II for November 2015.
Four computational models were applied to simulate the breaching experiment of Wijmeers II. These simulations are aimed to make a ‘forecast’ of the breaching process, taking into account that the experiment did not take place yet. The results of the computational simulations migth be compared to the measurements obtained during the actual breaching experiment.
The simulation results show that the assessed models produce acceptable results. However, no calibration was possible since no data is available yet to perform a proper comparison.
