Both the Southern North Sea (Belgian Continental Shelf) and the Western Scheldt estuary are monitored for international purposes : Oslo & Paris Commission (Paris Convention 1992), the Joint Assessment Monitoring Programme (JAMP) and the Regional Task Team II North Sea, and national purposes : passible harmful effects of sand axtraction, dredging.
MUMM analyses nutrients, salinity, temperature, suspended matter, dissolved oxygen, TOC an POC, chlorophyl a, phaeophytine and optical parameters in the watercolumn. Also the phytoplankton enumeration and species composition and the benthos species composition and biomass are part of the monitoring programme.
Quality assurance and quality control in analytical chemistry and laboratory practice receive a high priority.
