A hydrid prediction method of spatially two-dimensional morphological evolutions is described. It is based on the combined use of phenomenological extrapolation techniques and numerical simulation models. A first application concerns the evolution of a sandy shoal in the Eastern Scheldt, The Netherlands, after the construction of the storm surge barrier in the mouth of this estuary. A comparison with recent data shows that the mothod has yielded satisfactory predictions.
