Alien species The red alga Neosiphonia harveyi originates from Japan and the region around the North-Pacific. This alga probably reached Europe through transportation with cultured oysters and through attachment on ship’s hulls. This species was observed along the Belgian coast for the first time in 2000, in the sluice-dock at Ostend. This red alga is rather small and can most commonly be found growing attached to other algae, such as the wireweed Sargassum muticum and the felt-alga Codium fragile, although it also grows on hard substrate. [details]
