Alien species Tubificoides heterochaetus has been described by Michaelsen (1926) from material collected in Northern Germany (Greifswald) and was subsequently been redescribed by Baker (1981) from Michaelsens' lectotypes and from material collected in North Carolina. It was considered an alien species by Wolff (2005) but there is no evidence that the species is a non-indigenous species in western Europe [details]

Alien species Tubificoides heterochaetus is an oligochaete worm that was first reported in Belgian waters in 1952 in the Scheldt estuary. It is not certain where the species originates from and how it reached Belgian regions. It is assumed that originally the species occurred naturally in estuaries along the north Atlantic coasts. However it's also possible that the species has always been present in Belgian waters but until recently remained undiscovered. Therefore, the species is considered cryptogenic by some scientists. [details]
