Plumage: back and wings pale grey; rump and tail white; head white with black smudge behind ear; below white; breeding adult with black hood; spread wing shows white leading edge forming wedge at shoulder with white outer primaries; trailing edge white except outer primaries which are tipped black. Immature shows more brown in wings than adult and has a blackish band at tip of tail . Bare parts: iris dark brown or red-brown; bill red, orange-red with black tip in immature; feet and legs red, dull orange in immature. Habitat: coastal and inland waters.
