Abstract
Two companies, Scaldis Salvage and Marine Contractors, and Dredging International, have started work on a 6 year project to remove some 60 wrecks and obstacles from the River Schelde, to deepen the shipping channel and improve access to the port of Antwerp. This article outlines works involved in the first phase of the project which focuses on 8 wrecks. Equipment being used includes a floating derrick with suction and grab facilities, a crane barge, a diving and salvage vessel, and two scrap barges. Phase two of the project, beginning in early 1999, will clear three large wrecks.
