Abstract
The Westerschelde Tunnel is located in the south of the Netherlands and links the two parts of the Provinces of Zealand, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Zuid-Beveland, which are separated by the Westerschelde. Road traffic has up till now taken the detour via Belgium or crossed by ferry. This unsatisfactory transport link signifies major economic disadvantages above all for Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The first fixed link for road traffic between the communities of Terneuzen and Borsele are to be created by means of the two 6.6 km long tunnel tubes down to 65 m below sea level.
